Executive Orders (EO) signed by the President in January have led to a considerable amount of uncertainty on the part of our nonprofit community partners. While many of these EOs are being challenged in the courts, there is increasing anxiety over nonprofit sustenance and sustainability. The threat of federal funding freezes for agencies and initiatives that serve many of America’s most vulnerable populations is making it difficult to operate existing programs and plan for the future.
Thousands of organizations (and the people they serve) are impacted in communities across the country. Federal funds propel research for cancer cures, help to provide access to healthy food, and support nonprofits and government agencies that care for our veterans, just to name a few.
The National Council of Nonprofits, the largest network of nonprofits in North America, is tracking the impact of recent executive orders here.
How might the organizations that you support be affected, and are they adjusting their plans? What can you do to help sustain the causes that you care about? First, check in with your favorite nonprofits to ask how you can be most useful. Consider providing general operating support, which is unrestricted funding that gives nonprofit leaders more flexibility to address ongoing and developing needs. Find time to volunteer in your community as nonprofit staff are furloughed or eliminated due to budget cuts. Stay informed.
While philanthropy alone cannot bridge all the existing and emerging gaps, this is a compelling moment to share our time, talent, and treasure with nonprofit organizations that provide critical assistance in our communities.
