In the aftermath of deadly flash floods that devastated parts of central Texas in early July, donors across the country have been stepping up to support the ongoing recovery efforts.
After natural disasters, immediate and temporary responses designed to provide relief in the short-term are critical. Over time, responses aimed at longer-term recovery and restoration are necessary. If you are interested in supporting the affected areas in Texas through your donations of time, talent and treasure, consider the alignment of your charitable interests to the pressing needs. Where do you want to contribute, and what is most essential?
- Community foundations, with robust networks of partners already on the ground, are generally a great resource for donor guidance. The Community Foundation of the Texas Hill Country (CFTHC) has established a Kerr County Flood Relief Fund to support urgent needs and long-term rebuilding efforts in their region. Their team will distribute funds directly to trusted civic and nonprofit organizations providing rescue, relief, recovery services and flood assistance in the impacted communities. The CFTHC service area encompasses ten counties, and they have longstanding partnerships with organizations in proximity to the flooding.
- National organizations with local chapters are actively involved in relief and recovery. The American Red Cross of Central & South Texas, headquartered in Austin, is on the ground providing shelter and care. Other regional alternatives include the United Way of Greater Austin and the Salvation Army, among others.
- The Center for Disaster Philanthropy, which emphasizes medium- and long-term recovery strategies, focuses on community resiliency. Their Disaster Recovery Fund will support recovery and rebuilding in areas affected by central Texas flooding and other natural disasters. With the increased cadence of extreme weather events, catastrophe preparedness is crucial.
- Texas Public Radio offers a curated list of ways to help in the aftermath of the floods and offers ongoing live updates.
As a reminder: Gifts to nonprofit 501c3 organizations are generally tax deductible, while contributions to personal GoFundMe campaigns and to individuals are not.
