Tax Season Reminder

“The tax man cometh….” Actually the play is titled The Iceman Cometh, but for most, this time of year—and a reasonably mild winter thus far—means careful preparation for the tax man. No matter how many times you go through the exercise of gathering the necessary documents and information for your tax preparer, changes in the tax laws and individual circumstances can add new challenges.  As you begin the process of gathering your tax data, here is a list of some of the commonly overlooked items:

  • IRA contributions/distributions
  • Roth IRA conversions
  • Charitable gifts, including donations of appreciated securities and non-cash items
  • 529 education account contributions
  • Long-term care insurance premiums
  • Receipts for energy efficient improvements
  • Property sale documents
  • Property tax receipts

If you haven’t yet started, now is a good time to begin gathering the documents necessary to file your 2012 tax returns. With the anticipated delivery of 1099s extended to mid-February, you can expect arrival shortly.  The look and format of your 1099 has changed again, so make certain keep a lookout for it, as it will look different than last year.

Tax season does have an upside: it is a wonderful opportunity to clean out your desk and file cabinet. So don’t forget to mark your calendar for our annual Shred Days!

The 2013 Moneta Shred Days are scheduled for

Saturday, May 11th and May 18th.
