The PLANADVISER Top 100 Retirement Plan Advisers is an annual listing of adviser individuals, teams and multi-office teams that stand out in the industry in terms of a series of quantitative measures. These include the dollar value of qualified plan assets under administration (AUA), as well as the number of plans under advisement. The list also includes advisers who have more than 30% of their practice focused on 403(b), defined benefit (DB) or nonqualified deferred compensation (NQDC) plans.
Organizations on the list have a minimum of 110 plans or $900 million in retirement plan AUA; small teams had to advise at least $1.8 billion in retirement plan assets or 130 plans; large teams needed $4 billion or more in retirement plan AUA or 175 or more plans; and mega teams had to oversee at least $12 billion in retirement plan AUA or 250 plans.

To be considered for the annual PLANADVISER list, advisers had to either submit information and references or be nominated and enter the award process for the 2017 PLANSPONSOR Retirement Plan Adviser of the Year—individual, team or multi-office team. Applicants were then asked to complete a form, providing various details about their practice; advisers could also submit such information unsolicited, although not to be considered for the awards. The PLANADVISER Top 100 Retirement Plan Advisers list is based solely upon a set of quantitative factors and information supplied by the advisers themselves.
