Tax Season—Do You Have the Right Documents?

No matter how many times you go through the exercise of gathering the necessary documents and information for your tax preparer, changes in the tax laws and individual circumstances can add new challenges. As you begin the process of gathering your tax data,here is a list of the items you need to gather, and some of the commonly overlooked documents you won’t want to forget!

Gather income and deduction items:

  • W-2
  • 1099
  • Partnership K-1
  • Business Income
  • Alimony
  • Social Security received
  • Capital Gains/Losses
  • Interest paid (mortgage, student loan)
  • Charitable contributions
  • Medical expenses
  • Casualty losses
  • Unreimbursed business expenses
  • Tax refunds
  • Roth IRA conversions

Often overlooked:

  • IRA, 529 Education Plan, Health Savings Account contributions
  • Health Insurance Premiums (self-employed)
  • Tax Credits
  • Real Estate, Personal Property, and Income taxes paid
  • Real Estate closing statement (if bought/sold house)
  • Moving expenses
